Biogenic amine and amine precursor uptake by thyroid mast cells

Abstract

Interfollicular mast cells of the rat thyroid gland are taking up 5-HT (serotonin) and 5-HTP (5 hydroxytryptophan) but never take up histamine and histidine. Uptake of 5-HT was higher than that of 5-HTP. C cells accumulate only 5-HTP. The findings support earlier data concerning the role of 5-HT originating and deliberating from mast cells in the regulation of the function of follicular cells and demonstrate functional differences of mast cells of different localization.
