Abstract

The aim of the study: was to assess new and more effective protocols for the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer using biochemical (leucovorin) and imunological (low dose interferon-α) modulation of 5-Jluorouracil. Material and methods: Hundred and twenty-eight patients with no prior chemotherapy and measurable disease were entered on this trial between 1, January, 1993- and 30, September, 1995. The regimens were as follows: iv. infusion of 750 mg/m2 5-fluorouracil on days 1-5, plus interferon-A sc. 3x3 MIU weekly (IFN group); 20 mg/m2 leucovorin iv. bolus and from one hour later 4 hours iv. infusion of425 mg/m2 5-fluorouracil for days 1-5 (LV group); or the same dose and schedule plus 3x3 MIU interferon a weekly, (LV+IFNgroup); all treatment was repeated every 28 days. Results: The median follow up time was 19.6 months, and 104patients died. Response rate was 3 CR+13 PR
