Abstract

Ten per cent of kidney tumors are benign. Beside their rare occurrence, the following factors give their importance: on one hand, even with the modern uroradioiogical methods the non-metastatic, organ confined, small tumor can't be distinguished from the carcinoma, on other hand, the risk of malignant transformation existed in these benign tumors. Between 1 January, 1996 and 30 April, 2004, 492 interventions were performed because of kidney tumor in our department, 53 were performed laparoscopically. The histological examination was benign in 44 cases (8.94%). Depending on the size and localization of the tumor, resection or nephrectomy was performed, in the last two years 9 cases were operated laparoscopically. In our opinion, in tumors less than 50 mm periferially localized the resection, while in tumors larger than 50 mm or centrally localized, the nephrectomy is the method of choice. In exceptional cases, wait and see is permissible. The advantages of laparoscopic removal of small tumors are the definitive solution, the firm histological diagnosis and the elimination of doubtfulness of the biopsy.
