Batch oscillations and spatial wave patterns in chlorite oscillating systems

Abstract

As many as 50 oscillations may be observed in the potential of a redox or iodide sensitive electrode or in the absorbance of the starch-triiodide complex for a stirred solution containing chlorite, iodide, iodate, and malonic acid in the absence of external flows. Chlorite-iodate-thiosulfate solutions also exhibit batch oscillation. Repeated spatial wave patterns (trigger waves) may develop in initially homogeneous unstirred thin layers of ClO2--I--malonic acid solutions.
