Barkhausen noise measurement of strain induced martensite in austenitic stainless steel

Abstract

The aim of the work is to study the strain induced martensite in 18/8 austenitic stainless steel. Magnetic measurements have been made to characterize the amount of α′-martensite due to room-temperature tensile testing. The effect of cold work and annealing heat treatment was studied on the magnetic Barkhausen noise and hardness. The applied Barkhausen noise measuring method was.found an effective tool for studying the transformation mechanism of the austenite to α′-phase during cold work and the reverse transformation of α′-phase back to austenite due to heat treatment.
