Abstract

Arsenic mainly accumulates in the skin, hair, and bones. At the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s the As content in drinking water in four counties of south-east Hungary (County Csongrad, Szolnok, Bacs and Bekes) was extremely high. The primary cause of the contamination was found to be linked to the underlying geological formation of the region. Since 1981 teams from the Public Health Institutes and pediatrists of the involved counties have performed an epidemiological study and medical examinations of the population, with particular emphasis on children. The results of this study form the basis of this article. -from Author
