Application of the koesters interferometer in electrochemistry

Abstract

The Koesters interferometer is a laser-illuminated double-beam interferometer. The main advantage of this type of interferometer is its high immunity to environmental noise due to the close vicinity of the two interfering beams. This immunity makes it an ideal tool for highprecision measurements e.g., for the determination of surface stress changes of solid electrodes with the electrode potential. In these experiments the deformation of an elastic plate is measured. Choosing e.g., a circular AT-cut quartz plate with a thin metal layer on it in contact with the solution being the working electrode in an electrochemical cell provides the advantage to measure simultaneously surface stress change, surface mass and charge. In the present study, the electrochemical Koesters interferometer technique used for the determination of changes of surface stress of solid electrodes, as well as the kind and quality of information that can be achieved using this method are discussed.
