A new type of catalyst, the so-called shell catalyst, was used in a tube reactor for the dehydration of diols containing 6-10 carbon atoms in molecule. The surface of the inactive catalyst core was coated by a thin, active Cr//2O//3 - gamma - Al//2O//3 layer. This catalyst was used for the transformation of diols to dienes with a yield of 96%. The results concerning the useful length of life and regeneration are discussed, and the optimum parameters of isomerization of the produced dienes are treated.
