The crosslinked structure of polyester-urethane (PUR) can be efficiently destroyed by hygrothermal treatment. The outcome is a hygrothermally decomposed PUR (HD-PUR) the properties of which can be tailored upon request. Due to its amine functionality and rubberlike characteristics, HD-PUR may be a cost-efficient property modifier in rubber recipes. HD-PUR acts as polymeric plasticizer, rubber extender and vulcanization activator, or show a combination of them, in various rubber stocks. This has been demonstrated using for example natural (NR), epoxidized NR (ENR), nitrile (NBR) and styrene/butadiene rubber (SBR) formulations.
