Anomalous diffusion of tetramethylurea (TMU) in aqueous solution

Abstract

The discrepancy between the values of the characteristic size of the tetramethylurea molecule determined by various methods (elastic neutron scattering, physicochemical methods, neutron spin echo) predicts a peculiar arrangement of water molecules around dissolved TMU molecules. A cage-model commonly accepted for clathrates is proposed to explain the observed data.
