The statistical independence of subsystems was analyzed for checking the theory of decoherent histories for quantum mechanics. The diagonality of the complex decoherence functional was controversial. The statistical independence of the subsystems was violated by the weakened condition of consistency that allowed a nondiagonal imaginary part and was sufficient for the assignment of probabilities. As a result, various related generalizations of the concept of decoherent histories and the weakened consistency conditions were excluded.
