Angular dispersion of internal phonons in the Raman spectrum of a 1,3,5-trioxane crystal

Abstract

The angular dependence of the phonon frequencies in the Raman spectrum of a 1,3,5-trioxane single crystal, a unixial molecular crystal, has been studied. Two A1 and four E modes have been observed to show a detectable angular dispersion. The transitions are of the types ALO→ATO and ETO→ELO, indicating the dominance of the short range anistropic forces over the long range electro-static ones. A theoretical calculation of the dispersion curves has been performed using the exciton model and a dipolar coupling mechanism.
