Abstract

Nematodes have a key importance in most aquatic and terrestrialecosystems, independently of their lifestyle. Moreover, these worms playan important role as bioindicators in the investigation of organic andinorganic chemical pollutants as well. The free-living nematodes are usedin biomonitoring due to their specific sensitivity and tolerance patternstowards changes in the environment, for example metal pollution of theirhabitat. For this reason, broadening our knowledge on their metal uptakeand release characteristics will increase our understanding on the various\roles they play in contaminated habitats by providing explanations totheir stress responses.
