Analytical functions for fitting K X-ray doublet peaks from Si(Li) detectors

Abstract

A variety of functional forms proposed for the analytical description of peak shapes from Si(Li) detectors have been tested for Kα and Kβ X-ray doublets. A comparison of quality of fit has been made. Spectra of Mn and Fe K X rays from 55Fe and 57Co nuclides have been used for this purpose. Most of analytical functions tested are a Gaussian distorted by additive functions, but a Lorentzian and its modified form are also investigated. The results show that the best fits are obtained for the HYPERMET function. As a simpler form of the shape function, the Gaussian with the low-energy Gaussian tail can provide good fits. The functions built from a Lorentzian are not adequate for K X rays of medium-Z elements.
