Analysis of synaptic vesicles in F type axon terminals

Abstract

The shapes of the elongated or ovoid (F type) and spherical (S type) synaptic vesicles in the nerve terminals of the dorsolateral funiculi, ventral horn of the spinal cord and the cerebellar cortex of rat were analysed. To reveal morphological differences between synaptic vesicles, normal and ZIO stained samples were used. Densitometric tracing was applied to study the ZIO stained substances inside the synaptic vesicles. It is concluded that impregnation of the samples by ZIO can reveal new features of the synaptic vesicles. The shape of the vesicles in the F type terminal is biconcave, like that of red blood cells, rather than biconvex as has been suggested.
