The IR spectra of cis-cis, trans-trans, and cis-trans sodium muconates, the corresponding acid, and the methyl esters have been studied. The cis-cis and the trans-trans isomers can be classified as belonging to the C2h point group, and the cis-trans isomer as belonging to the Cs point group. The assignments for the bands are given. Frequency shifts and variation in intensities found between analogous spectral bands of the isomers are accounted for on the basis of the differences in steric arrangements.
