An iodine-free chlorite-based oscillator. The chlorite-thiosulfate reaction in a continuous flow stirred tank reactor

Abstract

In a continuous flow stirred tank reactor at 25°C, the reaction between chlorite and thiosulfate exhibits oscillation between pH 2 and 5 over a wide range of reactant concentrations and flow rate. Outside the oscillating range, bistability may also be observed. Without a flow (batch), an autocatalytic clock reaction takes place. This system constitutes the first example of a chlorite-based oscillator involving no iodine-containing species.
