Abstract

The control characteristics between a single enzyme, citrate synthase, and its proposed effectors have been studied and shown to be extremely complex. It has been demonstrated, for instance, that manipulation of the coupled malate dehydrogenase-citrate synthase system can change the control characteristics from an "energy charge" control to a redox control. Control of a metabolic pathway is suggested to occur at multiple points in that sequence and such complexity is postulated to be an important characteristic of the control mechanism in living cells.
