Aminopolycarboxylates of rare earths-VII. Effect of complex-formation on the 4f-5d transitions of Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions

Abstract

The absorption bands of aminopolycarboxylate complexes of Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions due to 4f-5d electron transitions are shifted from the aquo ion values. The Ce3+ bands shift in the red direction, this shift increasing almost linearly with increase in the number of functional groups on the ligand up to about 8-9; further increase leads to a decrease. The bands of the smaller Tb3+ ion shift in the same direction, but the direction of the shift changes with more than 6 functional groups. These changes are interpreted as consequent ion increases in the metal ion-donor atom bond distances as a result of steric hindrance and repulsion between the functional groups.
