Abstract

The morphology, chemical composition of the alveolar superficial membrane of the lungs as well as the examinations in respect of its development are discussed. The changes of the superficial membrane occurring in patients with chronic and acute respiratory disturbance are discussed. It is stated by the authors that in emphysema the superficical membrane becomes thinner, in the alveolar inner surface only bare areas remain. On the other hand, in the case of alveolar microlithiasis accumulation of the substance of the superficial membrane was observed. Among the acute respiratory disturbances no changes of the superficial membrane were observed either in experimental suffocation or in suffocation of man. In the case of aspiration quick destruction, and in the case of pulmonary oedema or artificial respiration morphologic and chemical injury of the superficial membrane in the area of the lungs was observed.
