In this paper it is demonstrated that destruction of nAChR characteristic to the neuromuscular junctions of patients with myasthenia gravis, is extended to their peripheral blood lymphocytes too. Lymphocytes of myasthenic patients exhibit several functional alterations, including increased proliferative response and impaired cholinergic modulation. The higher proliferation response to PHA and the higher IgG production of lymphocytes with defected nAChR is in good accordance with the known suppressive character of this receptor type on lymphocytes. The results presented here provide evidence of the impaired suppressor T-cell function in myasthemia gravis, possibly connected to the block/loss of nAChR on their surface. The results can be only partially explained by the presence of circulating anti-nAChR antibodies, therefore the role of other plasma factors i.e. thymopoietin schould also be considered.
