Aging of field cooled and zero field cooled Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+δ) monocrystals

In relation to the previously reported discovery that a small excursion in the applied magnetic field has a much stronger effect on Field Cooled (FC) Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ monocrystals than on Zero Field Cooled (ZFC) samples, we observed the evolution of the V-I characteristics for both preparations over several days. It is found that both FC and ZFC relax towards an \lqq equilibrium \rqq state. The V-I characteristic of this state is much more similar to the ZFC characteristic than to the FC one. Furthermore, relaxation times are much shorter for the ZFC samples (approximately 1 hour) than for the FC samples (several days). This is another experimental indication that the popular belief that a FC preparation results in the thermodynamical equilibrium state might be erroneous.
