Anatomy and function of Galen's anastomosis situated between nervus laryngeus superior and nervus laryngeus inferior were studied in dogs. The participation of Galen's anastomosis in the protective laryngeal reflex generated in the subglottic area was demonstrated neuromyographically to be mediated by an afferentation pathway. Hence, the preservation of Galen's anastomosis is proposed in case of human supraglottic laryngectomy.
