Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

Acute heart failure is a clinical syndrome characterized by low cardiac output, tissue hypoperfusion and stasis, and elevated pulmonary capillary wedge pressure. It represents distinct and clinically well defined states that can be classified into the following groups: decompensation of the chronic heart failure, hypertensive heart disease, pulmonary oedema, cardiogenic shock, high output cardiac failure and right-sided heart failure. The review dealt with the pathophysiologic background of the specific syndromes in acute heart failure, with the non-invasive and invasive diagnostic methods applied, as well as with the intensive therapeutic and invasive (catheter-derived and surgical) possibilities of their treatment.
