Abstract

In the course of studies of callus formation in experimentally induced fractures in rats, the authors employed the anisotropic metochromatic method of Romhanyi [1963] using the polarizing microscope. They noted that treatment with vasopressine improves the degree of orientation of the mucopolysaccharide protein complex in the basic substances of several parts of the callus. This observation, in conjunction with the other morphometric results published in a previous paper, gives reason to suppose that what is occurring here is in fact improved knitting of the fracture. The authors discuss the mechanisms of action of the test substance, its vasoactive and direct metabolic effects and also its secondary endocrinological effect. They believe the results and conclusions obtained to be rather of theoretical than clinical value. Basically, the callus is of purely academic value as an object for biological study.
