Absorption and photochromic effects related with chromium in bismuth tellurite - Bi2TeO5

Abstract

The new nonlinear optical material, Bi2TeO5, exhibits interesting photorefractive properties including a long-lived (years) signal component. Cr dopant enhances the photosensitivity of the crystal. The photochromic effect in the Cr-doped samples is related to Cr6+ → Cr5+ charge transition. The absorption spectra of the different Cr valence states are interpreted and the kinetics of the photochromic process is discussed.
