A radiotracer study of the adsorption of Cl-ions on rhodized electrodes

Potential dependence of the adsorption of Cl- ions at rhodized electrodes was studied by a radiotracer method in 1 mol dm-3 H2SO4 as supporting electrolyte. Four characteristic sections may be distinguished on the Γ vs. E (RHE scale) curve due to the potential-dependent state of the electrode surface. (E < - 50 mV almost complete coverage with respect to adsorbed hydrogen; - 50 < E < + 250 mV potential-dependent coverage with respect to hydrogen; + 250 < E < 600 mV double-layer region; E > 600 mV formation of surface O species.). A detailed study carried out in the potential range - 100-+ 250 mV shows almost complete reversibility of the adsorption with respect to the potential. In this potential range a relatively simple relationship was found for the description of the Γ vs. E curves. An attempt is made to interpret these results in terms of competitive adsorption between Cl- ions and hydrogen.
