A late Miocene thermophilous flora from pécs-danitzpuszta, Mecsek Mts., Hungary

Abstract

A late Miocene (Pannonian) flora from the Mecsek Mts., Pécs-Danitzpuszta represents the oldest among the Pannonian floras of Hungary recorded so far, and comprises thermophilous elements in relatively high numbers: Daphnogene pannonica KvaCek & Knob loch, Lauraceae gen. et sp., and Tetraclinis salicornioides. The latter occurs exclusively in this flora during the Pannonian. The dominance of lauraceous elements, and other thermophilous species, e.g. Myrica lignitum, indicates the warmest conditions during the late Miocene of Hungary. While the lakeshore lowlands were dominated by swamps, the occurrence of Quercus kubinyii, Tetraclinis salicornioides and laurophyllous vegetation suggests mesophytic habitats adjacent to the lake in the area of the Mecsek Mts. and thus in the SW Pannonian Basin at 10-11 mya.
