In the first part of the study of two parts the authors, mainly on the basis of literature data, summarize the knowledge on Maedi-Visna-infection in sheep. They present the characteristics of the causative agent, routes of transmission and the laboratory diagnosis. Presenting the losses caused by the disease they demonstrate the losses in ewes and lambs. They summarise the occurrence of the disease in Iceland and the eradication program thereof. They recommend three methods for the eradication: colostrum-free rearing of lambs of infected ewes, selection based on serological results and separate rearing of tegs of young ewes. Finally, they present the conditions of movement of breeding animals in EU and lack of relevant legislation in Hungary.
