The Be chain of isotopes is investigated within the semimicroscopic algebraic cluster model (SACM). For that the SACM is applied to odd-mass p-shell nuclei. We show that the main features of the Be isotopes can be well explained. Though for the neutron halo nucleus 11Be some problems remain, the shell model still can roughly describe the structures of halo nuclei. In 11Be a shell inversion takes place as a result of the high deformation of the system. The quadrupole -quadrupole interaction is found to play a dominant role in the structure of p-shell nuclei.
