The i.r. stretching and bending frequencies of the NH2 group of thioacetamide, thiobenzamide and cyclohexane-carboxylic acid thioamide have been studied in polar and nonpolar solvents. In nonpolar media two selfassociated species occur with characteristic NH2 bending frequencies. In dichloromethane solutions of the thioamides in the presence of proton acceptors 1:1- and 2:1 complexes have been detected. The NH2 symmetric stretching vibration of the complexes split into a doublet due to Fermi resonance with the first overtone of the NH2 bending mode.
